Why is the snooze button nine minutes?
Nobody chose nine minutes because it was good for you. It came out of a gear tooth in 1956, and we have all been living with it since.
Why is the snooze button nine minutes?
Because of the gearing in a 1950s mechanical clock. When General Electric-Telechron added a snooze to its 1956 alarm clock, the existing gear train could not be made to land neatly on ten minutes — the choice was a little over nine or a little over ten. They took nine, it became the industry convention, and every digital clock and phone since has copied a constraint that stopped existing decades ago.
It is worth sitting with that for a second. The interval that governs the first half hour of your day, for your entire life, was not selected by a sleep researcher, a doctor, or anyone who had thought about wakefulness at all. It fell out of the tooth count on a gear.
The Snooz-Alarm, 1956
The snooze button arrived commercially with the General Electric-Telechron model 7H241, marketed — genuinely — as “the world’s most humane alarm clock”. Pressing the bar pushed the alarm forward and let it ring again shortly after.
Mechanical alarm clocks already existed, in enormous numbers, with a settled gear arrangement. Adding a snooze meant adding a mechanism that worked with that gearing rather than redesigning the movement around a nice round number. Ten minutes did not divide cleanly into what the existing gear train could produce. Nine and a bit did.
A wrinkle in the story
The nine-minute figure was not fixed from day one. Collectors’ records of the early 7H241 units show snooze intervals of fifteen minutes or more before GE-Telechron settled on the roughly nine-minute reverse-rack snooze gear that became the standard. So this is less “an engineer chose nine” and more “the design converged on nine and then everybody copied it.”
The theory you have probably heard, which is wrong
The popular version of this story is that nine minutes was chosen deliberately — that ten minutes would let you fall back into deep sleep and wake up worse, so the manufacturers picked something just under.
It is a lovely story and there is no evidence for it. Sleep science in 1956 was not in a position to make that recommendation; the modern staging of sleep by EEG was barely established, and the physiology of sleep inertia was not described in anything like these terms for decades afterward. The tidy explanation was reverse-engineered later to make an accident look like a decision.
Which does not mean nine minutes is a bad number. It means nobody knows whether it is a good one, because nobody picked it on those grounds.
Why it survived the machinery that caused it
Digital clocks could have used any interval at all. Phones certainly could. Nine minutes persisted for the plainest possible reason: it was what people expected. A clock that snoozed for eight or twelve minutes would have felt broken, and no manufacturer had a reason to be the one to find out.
Apple shipped the iPhone in 2007 with a nine-minute snooze and kept it, unchangeable, for eighteen years. It was only in iOS 26 that the duration became adjustable — anywhere from one to fifteen minutes, per alarm. Which is the first time most iPhone owners have ever been asked what they think the number should be.
So what should it be?
There is no research establishing an optimal snooze interval, because the interval is not really the variable that matters. The controlled work on snoozing looks at the whole window: a designed 30-minute snooze period cost participants about six minutes of sleep, with no measurable cost to cognition, cortisol or mood.
What that suggests is a different question from “how long is a snooze?”. The useful questions are:
- How long is the whole window between the first alarm and the point at which you must be up?
- Does that window have an end you chose while awake?
- Does every alarm inside it sound and feel the same, or does it escalate?
On that reading, one fixed interval repeated indefinitely is the wrong shape regardless of whether the number is nine, five or twelve. Nine minutes is fine early on, when what you want is to drift. It is far too long at 7:26 when you must be out of the door at 7:30.
That is the argument for an alarm ladder — gaps that tighten as the deadline approaches instead of one interval repeating until something goes wrong.
